RISE Yoga Classes Helped Me Make Big Decisions ~ Student Testimonial

1. When did you start doing yoga at George Washington High School? How long have you been doing yoga?

I started practicing yoga last year at George Washington High School, and I now practice yoga once or twice a week at home. I usually watch youtube yoga videos when I practice by myself. However, I am more motivated when I’m doing yoga in class than by myself.

2. What are some of the challenges of being a teen today? Do you feel that yoga helps with any of these challenges?

Academics and life in general are challenging as a teen. The world is competitive and the pressure of it all is present everyday. The quiet practice of yoga really helps me release tension created by these challenges.

Life Changing Yoga ~ A Student Testimonial

George Washington High School Student Testimonial:

Dear RISE,

I just wanted to introduce myself and thank you for sharing yoga with us! My name is Amy L. and I was recently a student and athlete of Ms. Corbett’s. I always knew she was incredibly active and an incredible runner but the best parts of practices were the closing stretches and core work! Little did I know, she was actually teaching us yoga. I remember looking forward to child’s pose everyday. As soon as I learned that Yoga had made it’s way as a class offered at Washington, I was more than excited to sign up.

At first, I thought it’d be easy coming in as a runner and basketball player. Little did I know how challenging but rewarding the rest of the year would be.

1. Why do you do yoga?

I practice yoga because it connects me with my breathing and my inner self, and helps me inhabit the present moment. It loosens and invigorates my body, helping me wake up in the morning and giving me perspective when I’m stuck in my head or feeling stressed.

2. Why do you think it is important to support RISE yoga for youth?

RISE offers teens a rare opportunity to step outside of our fast-paced, goal-oriented culture and find a place to slow down and connect with themselves and their bodies. Today’s teens face great levels of stress and RISE’s programming can help them find their feet. I wish I could have been exposed to yoga and mindfulness in school when I was a teen!

1. Why do you do yoga?

I do yoga because it has the power to bring me more fully into myself. It deepens my sense of peace and calm, while increasing my power and strength through mind, body and spirit. When I do yoga, I honor the best of who I am.

Be Mindful. Meditate While You Cook and Eat.

Guest post by: Kari Kittinger

Most days I find myself rushing about, trying to get through everything that needs to be done. Do you ever feel this way? My assumption is… you do. We’re all pretty good at multitasking a half dozen activities as once — feeding the dog and cooking dinner while talking on the phone, knocking out work emails as we mindlessly put one bite of dinner after another into our mouths. By the time the stars are bright and it’s time to hit the pillow, we probably browse social media for a bit, fiddle around on the smart phone and then… click. It’s lights out.

What even happened today? Why can’t I remember what I ate for breakfast yesterday? These are questions we often ask ourselves in our busy lives because it is difficult to balance the busy with the life. But the life part of the equation is important and there are a couple of super simple practices around meals that might just take your mind off the busy and into your life for a few minutes. And even a few minutes can shift an entire day.

Cooking and eating can be an enriching experience for the body and the mind and a great activity to do as a family or with friends. Take a peek at this infographic below on how to meditate while you eat. Taking the time to study your food and be thankful for where it came from, its journey to your plate and how it will nourish your body is an inquiry we rarely take the time to focus on. This meditation will bring whole new sensations to your food and the nourishment you receive from eating. When we share this meditation with our students as part of the RISE Yoga for Youth curriculum they are always surprised by how eating mindfully changes the experience of eating into a multi-sensory experience.

1. Why do you do yoga?

My yoga practice keeps me centered, grounded and healthy, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. The benefits of yoga in my life extend way beyond the mat, it’s present in most all aspects of my life. My most influential yoga teachers include, but are not limited to, everyone I have ever met.

2. Why do you think it is important to support RISE yoga for youth?

RISE Yoga for Youth provides tools for teens to help them cope during this stressful time in their lives. How wonderful if more teens could be exposed to yoga, especially during such a transformational time of growth – physically, mentally and emotionally?
